– still the only car to travel faster than the speed of sound
Each year around the 15th of October marks off another anniversary for the Thrust SSC and their LSR of 763.035 making the Thrust SSR the first car to break the sound barrier. Although the run wasn’t at the Bonneville Salt Flats it’s still a momentous occasion for land speed racing (better known as LSR). Andy Green, the Thrust SSC pilot, set the record (breaking the sound barrier in the process) back in 1997 out on the Black Rock Desert. Some trivia about Andy Green’s run is that it took place 50 years and one extra day after another pilot broke the sound barrier for the first time: Chuck Yeager.
